HISTORY
OF THE CENTER
The RSC was established in 1983 as the Boerne Area Nutrition Center by
a number of concerned citizens from local churches. They realized
that the senior citizens in the area needed a place where they could
gather on a regular basis for food and fellowship. The name was changed
to the Rainbow Senior Center in 1985. For a number of years, the
Center was located in several different buildings around town. As
the result of a strong community based fund-raising effort, the Center
moved into its current permanent facility at 745 West San Antonio
Avenue in June 2000.
Since the beginning, the Center has provided programs and
services that help senior citizens in our area remain healthy, independent
and involved with life. The RSC Nutritional Programs and The RSC Transportation
Programs form the core of these services.
The RSC Nutritional Programs include the on-site congregate meal program
and the Meals-on-Wheels Program, which is available to any qualified
homebound individual in the area regardless of age. Through The RSC Transportation
Programs the RSC provides our members with rides to the Center each day
or area transportation for other local errands.
The RSC is a private, nonprofit tax-exempt organization. On a daily basis, it is operated by a small, dedicated staff who try to make everyone who comes to the center feel welcomed. The Center
is governed by a highly qualified volunteer Board of Directors who represent
a wide range of backgrounds and areas of expertise. In addition, the
Center has always had a strong core of dedicated volunteers who help
with a myriad of tasks from working in the kitchen to leading our line
dancing class.
The RSC receives funding for The RSC Nutritional Programs from several
local, state and federal programs. However, the bulk (over 75%) of the
Center’s operating funds come from donations from local individuals
and businesses, and from the fund-raising efforts of our members and
supporters. Unfortunately, all of these sources, including governmental
funding, are subject to fluctuation. To help provide a strong financial
base for the future, the RSC Board of Directors established the RSC ENDOWMENT
FUND in 2001.
Today, the Rainbow Senior Center is a wonderful tribute to the foresight
and dedication of those concerned citizens who helped found this organization.
The Board of Directors, and the RSC Staff, are committed to preserving
this heritage and to ensuring that the Center will be available both
for the seniors of ‘today and tomorrow’. |
